Skills for Independence: Equipping Teenage Mothers for Livelihoods

By Ivan Seguya | Project leader

Economic vulnerability remains one of the significant challenges facing teenage mothers. Without employable skills or opportunities to generate income, many young mothers struggle to meet their own basic needs and those of their children.

F SSIBU Mission Foundation is therefore working to connect teenage mothers with practical vocational and livelihood skills that can strengthen their pathway toward economic independence.

Through skills development, young mothers can explore areas such as tailoring, hairdressing and hair weaving, handcrafts, modern agriculture, entrepreneurship, computer skills, and other relevant vocational opportunities. Training is intended to provide practical knowledge that can be developed into employment, self-employment, or small-scale income-generating activities.

We believe skills development should be linked to confidence and opportunity. A young mother who acquires a practical skill gains more than technical knowledge; she gains a foundation from which she can explore ways of supporting her household and planning for her future.

Our work also includes mentorship and guidance to help participants understand responsible decision-making, personal development, financial awareness, and opportunities for continued learning.

However, training requires resources. Equipment, learning materials, qualified trainers, mentorship, and follow-up are essential to ensuring that skills development translates into meaningful opportunities.

Donor investment can help us equip more teenage mothers with practical skills that strengthen resilience, expand their choices, and create pathways toward greater independence for themselves and their children.
