Human and wildlife populations have increased on the edges of Muhokya sub county and so has conflict between them. Objectives of the project; 1. To create community awareness on how they can live in harmony with elephants. 2. To train community members on methods of guarding elephants 3. Improve livelihoods of communities affected by elephants raids
Human and wildlife populations have increased on the edges of Muhokya sub county and so has conflict between them. People are often injured and killed by elephants and other animals. In Uganda, over 50 people are killed by elephants each year In Muhokya, elephants raid farmers atleast twice a day and destroy many acres of crops, water systems leaving people in poverty and famine.
-Changing farming practices; Beneficiaries will be sensitized to grow crops which elephants do not eat such as chili. -Bee keeping; the project will supply 500 bee hives to beneficiaries whose land boarders Queen Elizabeth National Park. -Using grease to repeal elephants; Farmers will be taught how they can smear grease on ropes around their gardens to repeal -Training workshops on how they can co exist with elephants -Whistle blowing; the project will provide whistles to beneficiaries. -
Enhancing coexistence between rural communities and key wildlife species through proactive HWC prevention and skills development for livelihoods improvement.
