Challenge

First corona virus case in Kenya was detected on 12.03.2020 and infections increase daily. The President announced national curfew on unauthorized movement between 7pm to 5am and other restrictions that have exposed women and girls with disabilities to minimal likelihood of accessing essential services/needs such as health, information and social protection; earn livelihoods; and remain productive. Their human and legal rights, inclusion in the response to covid-19 and cohesion are critical.

Solution

The project will ensure upholding of the human and legal rights of women and girls with disabilities in the covid-19 era; include women and girls with disabilities in all stages of covid-19 response especially in the prevention, mitigation and monitoring plans by the (national government and) county government of Kitui and related agencies/departments; and ensure the cohesion among women and girls with disabilities through encouragement and self-help.

Long-Term Impact

The project will include women and girls with disabilities in the covid-19 pandemic responses, which will earn them a place in public participation in the future; it will create framework for disabilities engagement in socio-economic activities in employment, health, education, housing, mobility, information and social protection, which ensures sustainable livelihoods; it will bring unity and cohesion that will remain as a basis for common voice and action
