Dear Donors,
Across Ukraine, 3.9 million people have been displaced internally, with the largest movements occurring from frontline communities to safer districts and regional hubs in the east, including Kharkiv. Most families and individuals flee under fire, often with only minutes to pack, and arrive exhausted at transit centers where local authorities and humanitarian groups provide initial support.
The most recent UN-linked figure on organised evacuations from Ukraine’s front-line areas is about 150,000 people since June 2025 to August 2026, including nearly 18,000 children and over 5,000 people with limited mobility. These numbers reflect only assisted movements; many more people flee on their own and equally depend on the transit centers for safety and basics. In recent weeks, intensified shelling along the front line has driven a sharp increase in evacuations, putting additional pressure on reception points.
When buses arrive at transit centers in the eastern regions, families and individuals step out with small bags, uncertain about what will happen next. Many have spent sleepless nights. Some have lost their homes, documents or contact with relatives. The first hours at these shelters determine whether a person can rest, recover and plan their next steps, or remain in crisis.
Our role: first point of contact, first line of support
Together with our local partners, we are present at these transit centers in Kharkiv, providing the essentials that turn a crowded room into a place of safety:
Hygiene kits to help people maintain their dignity and health after days without essential supplies;
Food and warm meals to stabilise nutrition and provide adults with the energy needed to navigate registration and housing procedures;
Children’s necessities to reduce trauma and create moments of normalcy for children.
We work alongside our partners, WBWU and DVR, to fill the gaps in the crucial hours immediately following arrival, when stress levels are at their highest and resources are under the most strain.
