The first quarter of 2025 was marked by continued insecurity and deepening economic hardship. Yemen remains in a state of extreme crisis. More than a decade of ongoing conflict has left over 19 million people in urgent need of basic humanitarian assistance, including food, healthcare, shelter, and clean water.
Nearly half of the population is facing acute hunger, while access to safe drinking water remains limited for many. Alarmingly, around 65% of children under the age of five are suffering from acute malnutrition, placing their health and development at serious risk.
Projects Implemented in the First Quarter of 2025
Increasing Recovery Rates for Children with Severe Acute Malnutrition
Malnutrition among Yemeni children remains a severe humanitarian crisis, with half of all children under five affected. This crisis is driven not only by conflict and damaged infrastructure but also by soaring food prices, which have increased by over 300% in the past decade. In the first quarter of 2025, we provided assistance to over 600 children across multiple governorates. We reached conflict-affected and militarized areas that had long been inaccessible to healthcare services, bringing vital nutrition support to those who need it most.
From Malnutrition to Hope
Samir, a displaced father of five, fled Al-Dhalea Governorate in 2019 after his mud-brick home was destroyed. He relocated to the Kahlan area, where he and his family lived in extreme poverty, with no access to humanitarian assistance. His infant son, Mohammed, was suffering from severe acute malnutrition, largely due to poor maternal nutrition. During a field survey, our team discovered Mohammed’s condition and immediately enrolled him in our nutrition program. With the help of a supplementary food basket, Mohammed’s health improved significantly, bringing great relief to his mother.
A Journey of Survival
As part of the severe acute malnutrition supplement project implemented by the Yemen Relief and Reconstruction Foundation, the twins Zahraa and Batoul were identified at just 8 months old. Both were in critical condition, suffering from severe acute malnutrition with a MUAC measurement of 9 centimeters. They were also battling additional illnesses due to weakened immunity, while their parents faced extreme poverty and harsh living conditions. At the time, their mother was five months pregnant and struggling with severe exhaustion and poor health.
Faced with these challenges, our field team took immediate responsibility for supporting the family, working closely with the village’s voluntary community health team. We ensured the twins received milk regularly, educated the family on hygiene and child care, replaced old feeding bottles with clean ones, and advised the mother to take Pregnavit tablets consistently. From December 2024 to March 2025, we provided continuous follow-up until the twins were safely out of the danger zone.
Food Security and Livelihood Support
Amid the challenging humanitarian conditions in Yemen, we continue our efforts to alleviate the suffering of families affected by the ongoing conflict. One of our key initiatives is the food basket project, which aims to provide basic necessities to the most vulnerable families. To date, we have delivered more than 5,230 food baskets, benefiting over 41,840 individuals. This project stands as a successful model of effective humanitarian intervention during times of crisis. With continued support and collaboration, we can achieve an even greater impact and improve the lives of more Yemeni families.
Ramadan Iftar Meals
Food insecurity in Yemen remains a persistent humanitarian crisis, with approximately two-thirds of the population struggling to access the minimum amount of food necessary for survival. According to United Nations reports, food insecurity reached record levels in 2025, with 60.3% of households in government-controlled areas suffering from inadequate food consumption, compared to 44% in other areas.
Amid these challenging economic conditions, we continue our humanitarian efforts to support the most vulnerable families during the holy month of Ramadan. One of our key initiatives is the provision of Iftar meals for fasting individuals and the establishment of charitable kitchens to distribute free meals.
We delivered 6,732 Iftar meals to fasting individuals from poor families, aiming to promote social solidarity during Ramadan and ease the economic burden on the neediest households. Each meal served one individual, resulting in a total of 6,732 beneficiaries. In addition, we distributed 125 cartons of dates, benefiting 1,125 individuals through this initiative. This project was implemented throughout the month of Ramadan and covered several Yemeni governorates, including Sana'a, Aden, Hajjah, and others, reaching thousands of impoverished and displaced families.
Supporting Charitable Kitchens with Food Supplies
Through this project, we aim to support charitable kitchens with food supplies to provide meals for poor and needy families. We established contracts with 67 kitchens, each equipped with the necessary tools and staffed by a team of chefs. We delivered food supplies directly to these kitchens. Each kitchen prepared complete Iftar meals for families daily throughout the month of Ramadan in the Capital Municipality. More than 7,700 individuals have benefited from this project.
Electricity Generator Distribution
Electricity is a fundamental aspect of daily life, playing a pivotal role in improving the quality of life and promoting sustainable development. However, many poor families continue to live in difficult conditions due to the absence of this vital service. To address this, we distributed 47 electrical generators to families lacking adequate resources, potentially bringing about transformational change in their lives. Through this project, we aim to enhance the quality of life for the most impoverished families by enabling them to use essential electrical appliances such as lights, refrigerators, and fans, thereby contributing to a better and more stable living environment.
Water Tanks for People with Disabilities
In response to the need for water tanks expressed by the Association for People with Disabilities, we supported the association by providing two water tanks with a capacity of 2,000 liters and two tanks with a capacity of 500 liters for drinking water. This project was implemented during the holy month of Ramadan in the Hijri year 1446, corresponding to March 2025, benefiting 295 individuals within the association. We purchased and delivered the tanks as part of our ongoing efforts to provide services and implement projects that support people with disabilities. This initiative is part of a broader series of projects we carry out to promote social solidarity and deliver targeted support to individuals with disabilities.
Orphan Sponsorship Program
Amid the difficult humanitarian conditions Yemen is facing, the issue of orphans has become one of the most urgent concerns. According to the latest statistics, there are approximately 1.3 million orphaned children in Yemen. We strive to support and care for these children through comprehensive sponsorship programs aimed at improving their lives and securing a better future. We also assist families caring for orphans by providing financial and social support, enabling them to better meet the needs of the children under their care. To date, we have sponsored 534 orphans across various Yemeni governorates. Our goal is to provide both material and emotional support to orphans while improving their access to education and healthcare services.
No Longer on the Streets: Abdul’s New Life
Abdul recently passed his final exams for the fifth grade and is now moving on to the sixth grade. This marks an important milestone in his educational journey.
He shares, “My mother carries a heavy burden to ensure that my siblings and I can continue our education. I have six siblings, and we live in a rented house. We have no stable source of income, except for some limited support from my uncle, who is also struggling. My older brother had to leave school and now works in the afternoons selling water bottles at one of Sana'a's intersections to help my mother pay the rent.
Before I started receiving sponsorship funds, I used to help my brother sell water bottles in the afternoons to support our family. This took a toll on my studies and affected my academic performance. But everything changed once I began receiving monthly sponsorship. I felt relieved and no longer had to work after school. Instead, I was able to focus on studying and spend time on my hobbies.
Now, I’m happy and living a normal life like other children. I go to school and enjoy my hobbies without worry. Praise be to God, and thank you all.”
Today, Abdul enjoys several hobbies, including drawing, playing football, and going on excursions. He is in excellent health and does not suffer from any medical conditions.
Financial and Medical Aid
In light of the escalating humanitarian crisis in Yemen, we continue our efforts to provide financial and medical support to families affected by ongoing conflict and difficult economic conditions. Our goal is to improve the living and health conditions of the most vulnerable communities through effective programs and initiatives.
We have provided financial assistance to poor and displaced families to help them meet their basic needs. Direct cash support was distributed to families in need to cover the costs of food, education, and healthcare across several Yemeni governorates, including the Capital Municipality and Al-Bayda, benefiting 1,715 individuals.
Our financial and medical aid stands as a successful example of effective humanitarian intervention during times of crisis. With continued support and collaboration, we can achieve an even greater impact and improve the lives of more Yemeni families.
