Dear Friend,
This is our first time writing a report for this project. We have been struggling to install our project in this region. However, a while ago, we conducted an emergency food distribution in the Karamoja region during a food crisis.
Severe famine hits Karamoja people
Currently, in Africa, food prices have skyrocketed due to the Ukraine crisis, and costs of other commodities are rising across the board due to soaring fuel prices. In the Karamoja region of northeastern Uganda, where we are conducting our activities, the drought is causing people to starve.
In the Karamoja region, 517,800 people, or 41% of the population, are reportedly food insecure, an increase of more than 100,000 people since last year.
In this region, people cannot secure enough food, and vulnerable populations, especially the elderly and households with only children, face life-threatening situations. Unable to purchase food, they eat weeds to survive hunger, causing a serious food crisis.
Provided emergency food aid.
Terra Renaissance conducted an emergency food aid program in response to this situation. However, we found out from the stories of the villagers, some households had yet to receive assistance and needed more urgent help.
We distributed food to 150 socially vulnerable households, including child mothers, single mothers, people with disabilities, the elderly, widows, HIV/AIDS patients, and the poorest of the poor.
So, we supported an additional 13 households (for a total of 163 households). Finally, we could go deep into the village and deliver aid directly to those who had been left behind and had never received support.
People are facing harsh circumstances.
An older man lost his wife due to severe starvation. She had eaten poisonous wild cassava, which is not edible. He also lost his daughter due to malaria. Malaria is a curable disease if the patient is in good physical condition and receives proper treatment. There was nothing in his house.
There was a woman who was about to pass away. She also had not received food aid before.
There was a girl who her parents abandoned at birth. She has brain damage due to starvation and malnutrition.
The more one listens, the more one hears, the more one realizes that the area is full of harsh realities.
In Karamoja, 4 out of 10 people are said to have nothing to eat. Our support has only been able to reach a limited number of people. Terra Renaissance will continue to provide assistance in the Karamoja region to ensure that the most vulnerable are not left behind.
We really appreciate your continued support. They need our help. Please donate here: Hunger Relief for Most Vulnerable People in Uganda
