In Honduras, COVID-19 has hit very hard, with many people losing their jobs, food and medications becoming scarce, and prices skyrocketing. Hospitals are overrun and the COVID death toll continues to rise. Hurricane Eta has further devastated the country. It took Honduras over 20 years to recover from Hurricane Mitch, and now Hurricane Eta has caused similar devastation-this time during a pandemic. Mayor Potencial will help mitigate the effects by providing care packages and shelter.
On November 3rd, Hurricane Eta hit Honduras and devastated the country. The torrential rain has caused flooding and landslides, and according to CARE International, nearly 400,000 people have lost their homes. People are stranded waiting to be rescued, and collapsed bridges and sinkholes make aid delivery difficult. 57 people are dead and many are still missing. It took Honduras over 20 years to recover from Hurricane Mitch, and now Hurricane Eta has caused similar devastation.
The government has scarce resources to help, so other organizations will need to mobilize and collaborate to provide humanitarian aid. Mayor Potencial is dedicated to serving those in need. Now, more than ever, we must help those who were impacted by Hurricane Eta in the North Coast of Honduras. We are raising funds to provide food care packages, clothing, shelter, and construction materials. Mayor Potencial will collaborate with other local nonprofits and organizations to reach more families.
There are not enough shelters to assist the 400,00 people affected, and cases of COVID are increasing as people are forced into close quarters. Initially, funds will help first responders supply food, clothing, and provide shelter to survivors. Funds will then be used to rebuild homes. Reconstruction efforts will work towards building structurally secure and stormproof homes.
