As Hurricane Florence continues to intensify into a life-threatening storm, bringing up to 140 mile per hour winds and heavy rains towards the coastline of North and South Carolina, Save the Children is assembling a team in North Carolina to help children and families bracing for the powerful storm.
Save the Children is deploying its emergency response team and pre-positioning essential supplies for children and families including diapers, baby wipes, cribs, toys and books, as well as communicating with national and state partners to assess children's immediate needs in response to Hurricane Florence. We know from decades of experience that children are the most affected in the wake of emergencies and disasters, and often their needs fall through the cracks.
Save the Children's Child Friendly Spaces are safe, designated areas where children can play, socialize and begin to recover after a disaster. They are run by trained staff members and give parents a supportive place to leave their children while attending to their family's immediate and longer-term needs.
Children are always among the most vulnerable when crisis strikes. Offering them a safe place during times of disruption and uncertainty allows them to have much-needed fun again, while building their resiliency.
