It’s always hard to leave, but Fuel Relief Fund has completed our deployment in North Carolina. With your support, we were able to distribute over 7500 gallons of gas and almost 1000 gallons of diesel to those impacted by Hurricane Florence. We visited 3 of the most hard-hit areas, providing fuel to fire and police departments, radio stations, ambulances, local governments for city generators, as well as a total of almost 1700 families in need.
We focused our work primarily in lower-income areas where the needs were particularly acute and access to assistance was limited. People traveled over 40 miles to wait in the fuel line for up to 2 hours, some even pushing their cars to the fuel pump. In Bolton, North Carolina, the FRF team were told about a woman with 6 children and a sister with cerebral palsy who were stuck at home without power or fuel for their car. With her husband at work, she couldn't leave the house to go wait on line for gas, so we filled up her van and drove it back to her.
Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive across the board. FRF had great support and encouragement from the Mayors of Northwest, Navassa, and Bolton, North Carolina. In Northwest and Bolton, the mayors actually helped fuel up cars! Since the moment we started working, we have been receiving messages of gratitude via email, through our website, and on all of our social media platforms. Kathy Brown from Northwest, North Carolina wrote:
“After hurricane Florence hit North Carolina our small town was left with devastation and no power. We were unable to get gas because our local station was without power and also roads were closed and most people could not travel. It was as if God sent his Angels when the fuel relief truck and crews showed up to give gas to us. Thank y’all from the bottom of my heart for what you do for others and continue to do.”
None of this would have been possible without your donations so, in Kathy’s words, THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts!
