An update on your donation to the Hurricane Idalia

Thank you — we can't say it enough! Hurricane Idalia brought significant damage as it tore through Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas. The record-breaking wind speeds, reaching 125 mph, and storm surge marked it as the strongest hurricane to hit Florida's Big Bend region in over 125 years, causing damage worth billions of dollars and displacing hundreds of families. Your generosity provided much-needed assistance and relief to these families in their time of crisis.

The Hurricane Idalia Relief Fund powered two grants to vetted, community-led nonprofit organizations at the forefront of this crisis.

Here is a description of the critical work you’ve supported:

  • SBP (St. Bernard Project) has received over 500 cases and is actively guiding disaster survivors through the FEMA appeal process and helping them access other funding opportunities. The organization is also helping families enhance their safety by providing roof tarping and offering training for both individuals and nonprofit organizations actively engaged in recovery efforts. SBP has identified thousands of unclaimed cases, referring to disaster-affected individuals and families who have not accessed eligible recovery assistance. These unclaimed cases may result from factors like lack of awareness, barriers to access, incomplete applications, administrative hurdles, and complex eligibility rules. SBP is actively collaborating with local disaster relief organizations to locate and support these survivors, ensuring that no one is left behind in the long-term process of disaster recovery after Hurricane Idalia.
  • The Florida Immigrant Coalition is supporting immigrant and refugee communities affected by Hurricane Idalia. In the Tampa region, the organization has provided cash assistance to eligible refugees in need of government support. In rural communities in northwest Florida, FLIC is serving more than 150 families who have lost their jobs due to the storm, particularly in the case of a chicken farm severely impacted by floods. This support includes things like access to food and home repairs. Through its Rural Immigrant Health Project, which employs health navigators to help people access FEMA support, the organization is ensuring that critical services, such as emergency housing, medical care, food assistance, and financial aid, reach immigrant and refugee populations during the aftermath of Hurricane Idalia.

Your support of the GlobalGiving Hurricane Idalia Relief Fund is advancing community-led relief and recovery, and it means people received critical resources to help their community rebuild after the impact of Hurricane Idalia.

This fund is now closed and is no longer accepting donations. This will be the last fund report of this kind from our team. We hope you’ll stay in touch!

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
