Hurricane Matthew has caused severe damage in parts of Haiti, Jamaica, the Bahamas, and Cuba, killing over 800 people. The storm has also caused damage and widespread flooding in the southeast United States. This fund will help provide emergency supplies like food, water, and medicine in addition to any longer-term recovery assistance that is needed. All donations to this fund will exclusively support locally driven relief and recovery efforts for this disaster.
The storm has already destroy thousands of homes, caused extensive flooding, and killed hundreds of people. Dozens of GlobalGiving's partners are responding in Haiti, the Bahamas, and the United States. Donations to GlobalGiving's relief fund will support locally driven relief and recovery efforts on the ground across the impacted areas.
All donations to this fund will support recovery and relief efforts in the Caribbean and Southeast US. Initially, the fund will help first responders meet immediate needs like food, fuel, clean water, hygiene products, and shelter. Once initial relief work is complete, this fund will transition to support longer-term recovery efforts run by vetted local organizations. Unlike some other organizations, GlobalGiving has a track record of supporting successful disaster recovery in the region.
We believe that organizations that are deeply rooted in local communities are often in the best position to provide long-term support for disaster victims. By funding the relief efforts of local organizations, donations to this fund have the potential to build stronger disaster-response capacity so that these organizations are better equipped to face future disasters. GlobalGiving will post reports about how funds have been used and will email these reports to donors and subscribers.
