Partnering on Preparedness

By Marta Brill | Grants Manager

Health Equity International / St. Boniface Hospital (HEI/SBH) has 40+ years’ experience working through natural disasters, epidemics, and political instability, and has a strong track record in leading effective emergency response efforts in southern Haiti.

Over the past year, HEI/SBH has joined with eight other health facilities in Haiti's southern peninsula to address the management of complex cases and disaster preparedness. The Southwest Corridor Healthcare Alliance meets regularly to discuss emerging best practices, share and troubleshoot challenges, and build relationships. We are creating a strong referral network that will help patients receive specialized care when needed.

HEI/SBH also partnered with Project Hope on cholera prevention and treatment initiatives across the region. Natural disasters like hurricanes, flooding, and earthquakes can cause cholera cases to surge in Haiti, where many people lack access to clean water and sanitation.

Recent prevention activities included:

  • Health education sessions on cholera were integrated into the waiting rooms of St Boniface Hospital. This ensures that individuals seeking healthcare services are exposed to crucial information about cholera prevention, symptom recognition, and appropriate actions to take.
  • Awareness campaigns were organized at community gatherings and educational events to disseminate information.
  • Distribution points for oral rehydration solution were strategically established at "rally posts" -- pop-up health centers in high-traffic community areas like markets and schools.

When cholera cases emerge, HEI/SBH’s team responds swiftly at its designated treatment center stocked with critical medications and supplies, including antibiotics, oral rehydration solution, and personal protective equipment. This year, we added a new extension building with a separate entrance and space for 25 people with cholera symptoms.
