Summary

Women and girls displaced by armed conflict suffer most from not having suitable accommodation or access to a bathroom and fresh water. Many live in shared shelters or abandoned buildings without a change of clothing or the means to attend to their hygiene needs. A lack of sanitary pads and clean underwear prevents women and girls from going out and can also cause infections and skin disease. The project will provide clothing and a supply of sanitary pads to restore dignity and well-being.

Challenge

Since the beginning of the Syrian crisis displaced people from Syria have been arriving in large numbers to live in the Palestinian refugee camps in South Lebanon. We have assessed their needs and identified that women and girls face the most challenging conditions because they do not have a change of clothes, clean underwear or access to sanitary pads. The resulting poor hygiene can cause infection and limits their ability to interact with others, leading to isolation and discrimination.

Solution

The project will play an important role in protecting displaced women and girls from Syria from infection, isolation and abuse and help them to maintain their dignity. It will also enable women and girls to go out, attend school, college or training and enable women who work to attend their workplace. As a result displaced women and girls from Syria will be able to settle more readily in their new environment and enjoy a more fulfilling role in family and community life.

Long-Term Impact

Local culture inhibits women and girls from expressing themselves and the challenging circumstances under which displaced women and girls live has a seriously negative impact on all aspects of their lives. Providing women and girls with a change of clothes, clean underwear and a supply of sanitary pads will restore their dignity, improve their well-being and enable them to go out, get to know their new neighbours and attend school, college, training or work.
