In ACDI's commitment to ensuring the right to healthy and adequate food, we support spaces for crop management, family gardens, school gardens, and community gardens.
In Los Pérez, a rural area of the town of Taco Ralo, through our territorial promoter, we strengthen the community garden of five families who have decided to join forces in their daily work to improve their nutrition. The participants range in age from 20 to 60 years old, demonstrating that garden work is a heterogeneous environment where everyone can participate.
With the work of these five families, a total of 30 people, including several minors, can access organic vegetables. This represents a significant milestone in guaranteeing the right to healthy nutrition for children and adolescents.
One of the participants, Catalina, tells us that she was not familiar with gardening until ACDI arrived. She is grateful to have been able to get involved in this crop management space, as it allows her to learn about the world of agroecology and help her family have better food.
Regarding the organization of the community garden, Catalina tells us that it is a nice challenge to manage a shared space with other families. Reaching agreements among all participants is essential, and she considers that they have been doing it very well.
Being able to organize so that the planting and harvesting process is guaranteed and monitored by everyone. She tells us that when it comes to gardening tasks, they agree to do them one day a week for the care and watering of the crops. She mentions that on weekends they also gather to perform other tasks required by the garden, such as setting up seedlings.
Another strong point of this community garden is that they not only improve their nutrition but also sell the garden surplus to businesses in the area to earn extra income for their family economies. Thanks to the Kokue App, they can organize themselves with the planting and harvesting calendar, allowing them to provide information to their buyers about when their vegetables will be ready.
