The unsustainable methods of farming by peasant farmers in Kumbo, such as slash and burnt, deforestation and over use of chemicals has led to the destruction of the environment and increased hunger and malnutrition in the region. Integrated Agricultural Association (IAA) is promoting sustainable agriculture in the area as a possible outcome in the fight against hunger and malnutrition.
From the 18-19th of April 2024, Integrated Agricultural Association (IAA) trained 78 smallholder farmers on regenerative practices and vegetable farming in Kumbo. 71% participants were women while 29% were men and 40% young people. IAA trained on techniques for conservation agriculture, which is the foundation of climate-smart agriculture. Techniques include using cover crops, planting with green manure and “no till” practices, conserving water and using native varieties of crops and trees to manage pests, mulching, composting and rotating crops each year. These approaches increase productivity, decrease costs and improve soil fertility, all of which strengthens. 1000kgs of cow dung was distributed to 20 women who owns a kitchen garden to substitute the use of harmful fertilizers and improve soil fertility, while producing healthy food and conserving water and biodiversity.
Integrated Agricultural Association (IAA) aims to raise $10,000 for this program and have raised $30 through globalgiving. IAA need $9970 to go and with your continued donation through globalgiving, IAA would be able to continue this incredible work and do even more to fight the impact of climate change on agriculture through sustainable mitigation and adaptation measures, that would build climate resilience of agricultural communities accross Cameroon. We thank you for being part of our team as a valued donor and supporter, we deeply appreciate your support that would enable us create meaningful change in our community.
