To fight the adverse effects of climate change in Kumbo, the project will address high rate of deforestation and unsustainable agriculture practices by fostering community engagement of smallholder farmers and peasant women in reforestation. Through community outreach, farmers will be trained on agroforestry practices, climate-smart agriculture, sustainable bee keeping, horticulture and vegetables gardening to achieve food security and economic growth for 250 families in Kumbo.
For three decades now, the unsustainable methods of farming by peasant farmers in Kumbo, such as slash and burnt, deforestation and over use of chemicals has led to the destruction of the environment and increased food insecurity in the region. Trees were cut down for wood fuel, farm land and building poles and the loss of tree cover leaving the land bare, is causing erosion and widespread environmental problems. Presently, the changing climate is adversely affecting farm productivity in Kumbo.
Through community outreach, the project will establish 5 agroforestry tree nurseries in 5 villages to voluntarily distribute seedlings to farmers, and training on climate-smart agriculture, sustainable bee keeping, horticulture and vegetables gardening and plant 150 household gardens with nutrient rich seeds, donate bee hives to 100 families and agricultural tools to 150 families to boast production and improve food security at the family level.
1.) The project will plant over 10,000 fruit trees to restore around 100 ha of degraded farms. 2.) 100 families will produce at least 2000 litters of honey each year and each family earns at least $50 per fruit tree in a year, which increases income and food security. 3.) 100 beehives will be constructed and colonize to multiply the bee population and increase biodiversity conservation. 4. It will help families reduce their reliance on external inputs through soil conservation.
