Summary

The project will establish 5 tree nurseries in 5 villages of Foumban Municipality to voluntarily provide 25000 agroforestry tree seedlings to 500 rural households to combat climate change, poverty and malnutrition. It will focus on Moringa tree planting as cash crop. However, other economic trees like pear, Mangoes, Oranges, Papaw and large herbs like bananas and plantains remains the main focus in achieving food security and economic growth for low income families in the area.

Challenge

The population of Foumban faces malnutrition, poverty and environmental degradation caused by deforestation for agriculture. Seed shortages and lack of irrigated lands leave farmers reliant on fewer crops, like maize and beans, that aren't drought resistant crops . In Foumban, 88% of smallholder families are unable to grow enough food throughout the year. The land quality is poor and the area suffers prolonged droughts and erratic rainfalls which makes it hard to farm successfully.

Solution

The project will establish agroforestry tree nurseries in 5 villages to voluntarily provide 25000 tree seedlings to 500 households to promote the value of agroforestry and achieve food security and economic resilience for over 250 people in Foumban. Training will be provided on agroforestry techniques and food processing, focusing on Moringa. However, other economic trees like pear, Mangoes, Oranges, Papaw and large herbs like bananas and plantains will be of great focus to fight poverty.

Long-Term Impact

1. Through the planting of trees, the project will generate $50 for each household per year per fruit tree and save approximately 500 tones of CO2 each year. 2. A cycle of empowerment. First, the project supports the communities involved to relate differently with trees and help 70% women to understand the value of agroforestry. More productive farms, more diverse products and better marketing of crops will lead to women's economic empowerment and better representation in decision making.
