Thanks to you, the silence broke in Los Altos

Ancestral midwifery wisdom breaks the silence
Ancestral midwifery wisdom breaks the silence

In Los Altos de Chiapas, preventive health care faces barriers of gender, language, and distance. Prostate cancer is among the leading causes of death for adult men in Mexico, but deep cultural taboos keep many men from ever getting tested in time. Nationally, UNICEF Mexico has reported that roughly 2 in 10 girls miss school during their period, mainly due to a lack of clean water and adequate restrooms — a shortage that is more acute in the state's rural areas. Thanks to your solidarity, we are weaving alternatives so communities can claim their right to dignified, intercultural health care.

During a health fair in Huixtán, inaugurated by the municipal president — who was the first to take the test in front of the community — a 53-year-old Tsotsil farmer eyed Ixchel, A.C.'s screening booth with distrust. He had never been checked before. A bilingual facilitator approached him respectfully, greeted him in his mother tongue, and explained that the test was just a small finger prick. She spoke to him about Lekil Kuxlejal, the good life, and how taking care of himself was the best way to protect his family. Encouraged by the local authority's example, he reached out his hand. The result was positive. Ixchel's team immediately activated its support protocol: a discreet home visit, a clear explanation to the family, coordination with the health center, and close follow-up. Today, thanks to that early detection, this father continues working his land and shares his story with other men in his community, repeating that taking care of yourself before you feel sick is the greatest act of love for your family.

This story is one of 887 lives your donation touched directly this semester through project #45642: 243 men received preventive screenings with Ixchel, A.C.; 300 people accessed free oral health care and nutrition workshops with Sanando Heridas; 87 girls and mothers reclaimed their menstrual dignity with Sinergia (Lunas de Barro); 43 midwives strengthened maternal care with FOCA; 55 families installed greywater treatment systems with UNECODES; 20 people revived herbal medicine with Sakil Nichim; and 74 artisan women advanced toward economic independence with El Camino de Los Altos. Even Mundo de Talentos, which closed operations in May due to a lack of external funding, met 100% of its goals and left 65 young people with new life skills. Behind this network, your donation also strengthened the internal systems that sustain it.

All of this happens because you chose not to look away. In every hand reaching out for a test, in every girl who smiles without fear, in every garden blooming thanks to recycled water, your solidarity is present. Soon we'll share more achievements from this network of community care that, with you, keeps growing.
