Summary

This project will resuscitate a program which trains girls and young women in computer end-user for free under the program called ICT for Education (ICT4Ed). ICT education is a program which the organization has been implementing since its establishment in 2010. Recently, regulatory authority (TEVET) advised us to boost our training center by adding more computers and finding a spacious room so that we meet the standards of training these girls in a conducive and up-to-standard environment.

Challenge

Unlike boys, girls do not have access to learn computer either at home or at their friends' place. The majority of girls in Malawi; and Mzuzu in particular finish secondary school education without knowing how to use a computer. When these girls enroll in colleges and universities, they fail to compete with their boys counterparts considering that 70% of assignments at college level require one to use a computer. This eventually affect the performance of a girl child in her studies.

Solution

Revolution Human Aid and Transparency Initiative (REHAAT-INITIATIVE) runs a program of offering free training to girls and young women most of 15-35 years old in end-user computer. The program targets girls that have just completed their secondary school education and are planning to enroll into one of the colleges or universities in Malawi. This training prepares girls well for the college/university education which requires frequent use of computer in academic work.

Long-Term Impact

In the long term the program will increase the percentage of girls that enroll in colleges and university and successfully complete their studies with good performance. The project will also contribute to sustainable development goals numbers 4, 5 and 10 by promoting inclusive education and also reducing inequalities between boys and girls by promoting gender equality by giving equal chances to a girl child to learn computer.
