Two in every five pregnant women in Eastern Uganda have anemia, which poses serious risks to both maternal health and fetal well-being, and increases the risk of child death. To combat these risks, CenRID has worked to provide essential prenatal vitamins and supplements to over 600 pregnant women and 2,800 children under 5 years old in Eastern Uganda. With the money raised through this campaign, the CenRID team can greatly increase our outreach and help 1,000 more pregnant women and children.
The Wonkole and Irongo Sub-Counties are rural communities located in the North Western part of Kamuli and Luuka Districts in Eastern Uganda. Food insecurity remains a fundamental problem in this population, causing micronutrient deficiency and chronic undernutrition, which overall account for over 60% of deaths in children under 5 in Eastern Uganda (USAID). Additionally, two in every five pregnant women in those district have anemia, which poses serious risks to maternal and fetal well-being.
The project will seek to address the nutritional deficiencies of expectant mothers and children under 5 in those sub-counties. Trained village health teams (VHTs) will administer Vitamin A to children under 5, and also provide prenatal vitamin supplements expectant mothers in remote and underserved communities. The children's caregivers and health workers will also receive training on nutritional counseling and maternal nutritional needs.
The project will provide Vitamin A and prenatal vitamin supplements to 2500 children and 1000 expectant mothers, respectively. 30 health workers and over 600 households will also receive training on nutritional counseling and maternal nutritional needs. We expect these outputs to stimulate a positive environment for healthy eating habits and improve nutritional security, lead to an improvement in quality of life, and ultimately, increasing the child and maternal survival rates in our districts.
