This project seeks to improve livelihoods, nutrition, and psychosocial wellbeing of 10 People Living with HIV (PLHIV) through small-scale mushroom production in Motshane. PLHIV often face unemployment, food insecurity, and stigma, which negatively affect treatment adherence and mental health. Mushroom production offers a low-cost, climate-smart, and nutritionally rich livelihood option that can be managed locally with minimal land and water requirements.
People Living with HIV in Motshane continue to experience high levels of poverty, food insecurity, and limited livelihood opportunities. These challenges undermine nutrition, treatment adherence, and mental wellbeing. Many income-generating projects require significant capital, land, or physical labor, which may not be suitable for PLHIV. There is a need for a sustainable, low-risk livelihood intervention that improves nutrition while generating income and restoring self-worth.
This project will improve food and nutritional security for participating households, as mushrooms provide a nutritious source of protein, vitamins, and minerals. Beneficiaries will also have the opportunity to generate income through the sale of surplus mushrooms, contributing to greater household economic stability. Participants will gain practical skills in sustainable agriculture and small-scale entrepreneurship, strengthening their long-term livelihood opportunities.
The long-term impact of the project will be improved economic stability, health, and social inclusion for people living with HIV and their households. By gaining sustainable mushroom production and small business skills, participants will be able to maintain a reliable source of nutritious food and income beyond the life of the project. Improved nutrition can also support better overall health and treatment adherence for people living with HIV.
