Summary

The FOL-Liberian Health Team will offer innovative and unique continuing professional development workshops in January 2022. 20 nursing and midwifery faculty will attend Monday to Wednesday; 21 hospital supervisors will attend Wednesday to Friday; the overlap day with both groups, will allow academic and practical sides of health care delivery to talk. The goal is to enhance competencies and evidence-based theoretical and clinical performances of faculty, nurses, and midwives.

Challenge

Maternal mortality in Liberia is 725 deaths per 100,000 and neonatal mortality is 37 deaths per 1000 births (WHO, 2017). Professional development for the renewal of licenses is not mandatory in Liberia, leading to a gap in the provision of quality care. There is a critical shortage of continuing education for practicing nurses, midwives and teaching faculty. Representatives from the Liberian Board for Nursing & Midwifery and the Liberian Nurses' Association will also attend the workshops.

Solution

Improving health care in Liberia is a priority for the Friends of Liberia. This project will provide up to date training, education and skill development for twenty supervisory nurses and midwives, as well as twenty-one teaching faculty from accredited institutions. By training them to train others in their classes and facilities, quality healthcare will be increased. This project will ensure continuous professional competency as a way of improving health care outcomes in Liberia.

Long-Term Impact

The Liberia Health Team, with support from FOL-US and Global Giving conducted a professional development workshop for nursing/midwifery faculty in January 2020 and two separate workshops for nursing/midwifery faculty and clinicians in January 2021.The current COVID situation will have a long-lasting impact on the future of nursing/midwifery educators' instructional skills & practicing nurse and midwife clinical skills if plans are not made to fill in the gaps. Continuing education is a solution.
