Challenge

Children with disabilities (CWDs) in Kamuli District miss out on early Childhood Education (ECE) yet ECE has been proven important to their development. This is due to such challenges as the early years being spent on rehabilitation, the high cost of accessing ECE for an average household of children with disabilities etc. These children then enroll for Primary Education when they are much older yet not ready leading to poor learning outcomes and consequentially to a vicious cycles of ignorance.

Solution

The project will establish 15 Inclusive Home-based learning Centres within communities to increase access to Early Childhood Education for vulnerable children including children with disabilities who do not have access to formal education centers. The project will work with Kamuli District Education officials to conduct trainings for parents and caregivers, support the establishment of the centers. The project will also provide learning materials and adapt the learning environment for learning

Long-Term Impact

The project will improve school enrolment, retention, and completion for 225 Vulnerable children including children with disabilities in Kamuli District in the first year. In the long run, this education project will provide children with disabilities with an opportunity to contribute productively to the development of their communities and reduce the dependence syndrome. The financial status of caregivers of Children with disabilities will be improved since more time will be spent on work.
