World Council of Credit Unions recently visited refugee camps in Kurdistan. Many women left behind in the war on ISIS were powerless. Many have been beaten, abused and suffered unspeakable violence. One such camp recently started offering self defense training for women and girls and through this activity, have regained a sense of self-confidence and dignity. World Council would like to support these classes into the future and is seeking to raise $25,000 for support in 2019-2020.
The problem is helping displaced persons in Kurdistan move onto the next chapter in their lives by finding sustainable means of support. In some cases this is a small business or empowering women to help themselves and defend themselves. Tragedy touches just about every family in the camps and people face separation from loved ones and have endured violence. Self defense training has yielded immediate results to help empower women.
Funding will offer the ability to continue existing self defense training expand the training to other refugee camps within Kurdistan.
Women who have taken the training have a newfound sense of self worth and dignity and now know how to protect themselves - for the rest of their lives.
