Access to the right for rehabilitation

By Safarov Sobirjon | Director

Rehabilitation groups for children with disabilities continue providing access to the right for rehabilitation services for 268 CWDs could. DRJ developed a data sheet for keeping more accurate information on children’s attendance. Through the activities our organization promoted and facilitated peer learning among other social workers to improve the quality of rehabilitation services in community rehabilitation groups. Through this project, social workers strengthened their networking in providing rehabilitation services in Rudaki Region. Meanwhile, a new community rehabilitation room was opened in one of the remote subdistricts in Bobojon Gafurov District. This initiative was promoted by one of the community members, who participated in the Inclusive Education trainings. DRJ provided all required stuff, like development toys and other small equipment for rehabilitation services. Children with disabilities and their families come to the rehabilitation group twice a week to receive rehabilitation services, improve their physical health and develop cognitive and social skills. At the same time mothers of children receive psycho-social support which helps them to increase their self-esteem. During the informational sessions parents of children with disabilities share their experience on how to raise a child with disability and learn from each other.

Story

Early intervention and timely referral help Yasmina to develop!

Yasmina is a 4-year-old girl with Down Syndrome. She was born in a remote village in the Northen part   of Tajikistan. Despite of fact that the family travels long distance to bring the child to the rehabilitation services, the family tries do not miss sessions and keep good attendance.

Yasmina’s mother said: "Until Yasmina was 6 months, I did not know that my child was a child with special. She is my firstborn. She was born very weak. The doctors in the maternity hospital and the family doctor basically fought for her life so that she would get stronger and gain weight. When she was 6 months old, we took her to the city for medical check-up, and there I first heard about my daughter's diagnosis. She had Down syndrome and heart problems. I often came to the city with my child for treatment.

When she was 2 years old, the doctor sent us for the rehabilitation services to Public Organization Manbai Mehr. My child had a delay in her development. She could not sit, could not talk and her hands were weak that she could not hold things properly.

When I saw how social workers work with children at the rehabilitation room, I decided to bring my daughter despite of the long hours to travel. When my relatives found out about this, they supported me. My husband found a job in the city and rented an apartment. My mother-in-law, my daughter and I moved to the city.

At first, my daughter took rehabilitation in the Early Intervention group. Teachers have done physical exercises and speech therapy with my daughter, regularly. I was also given psycho-social support.

I participated in lessons for parents, where I received a lot of useful information and learned many things on how I should raise a child with special needs.

Now, my daughter is 4 years old and she is in the day care group. Her physical condition has improved. She can sit independently, stand with support and walk with the help of a walker. She learned to speak, but at the moment her vocabulary is poor. The most important thing, she learned to say "MOM"!

I am very grateful to all the staff for their hard work and support they have given to my child and my family.
