ENHANCE ACCESS TO CLEAN WATER & SANITATION

Project Overview: In the last quarter, The Ngao Foundation successfully raised funds through Rotary Clubs to install a UV Water Filtration machine at St. Joseph Primary and Nursery School, located in the Kangemi informal settlement. This initiative, conducted from January 2024 to June 1st, 2024, supports over 650 students and staff by providing access to clean, safe drinking water.

This project marks a significant step in our ongoing efforts to enhance water quality and improve sanitation and hygiene in the community. By ensuring the availability of clean drinking water, we are contributing to the overall health and well-being of the students and staff, thereby fostering a healthier and more productive learning environment.

This achievement not only improves immediate health outcomes but also sets a foundation for long-term positive impacts on the community's overall health and development.

Project Activities

1. Installation of a Modern UV Water Filtration Machine

An advanced UV water filtration machine was installed to ensure the purity and safety of drinking water for the school community.

2. Establishment of Seven Safe Water Drinking Points

Seven accessible and convenient drinking points were created to give children easy access to clean water throughout the school.

3. Installation of Two 5000-litre Water Tanks

Two 5000-liter water tanks were installed to ensure the students' storage and easy access to filtered water.

4. Formation of Children WASH Ambassadors Clubs

Children WASH Ambassadors Clubs were formed to educate and empower students to advocate for and maintain high water, sanitation, and hygiene standards within the school.

Project Goal

This was achieved through the installation of modern filtration systems, accessible drinking points, and educational initiatives for students.

Before the project, the school community faced significant health risks from consuming contaminated water, leading to frequent illnesses.

• A notable drop to zero in sickness cases among students, teachers, and non-teaching staff since the installation of the clean water system.
• No reported cases of stomach problems or waterborne diseases since the project's completion.

Monitoring and Sustainability

Installation Adjustments

A new water line was installed to supply water to the raw water tank, as well as five additional 10,000-liter tanks within the school premises, ensuring adequate water storage capacity and distribution.

COVID-19 Adaptations

Repairs were made to an existing handwashing point to separate it from the newly installed drinking water points, maintaining the integrity of the clean water supply.

The St. Joseph WASH Project has successfully met a critical humanitarian need by providing clean, safe drinking water to the school community. This initiative has not only improved health outcomes but also enhanced educational performance and overall community well-being.
