GET THE COMMUNITY ENGAGED IN WASH

By Anthony Hulula | Director/Project Leader

Introduction

Communities in the areas served by The NGAO Foundation face many challenges regarding access to clean water and proper sanitation. However, there are also significant opportunities to use existing community assets to address these issues. In the last quarter, The NGAO Foundation used the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) model to engage the community through its Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) initiatives. By leveraging the community’s resources and strengths, we have empowered individuals to take ownership of the solutions, creating long-term sustainability.

Key Activities and Achievements

  1. Provision of Clean, Safe Drinking Water Over the past four months, The NGAO Foundation has successfully provided clean and safe drinking water to 1,626 households. This initiative has not only enhanced water quality in these homes but also promoted community ownership of the WASH project.
    • Many participants learned how to operate water filtration machines.
    • They gained an understanding of the importance of safe drinking water for health and well-being.
    • This increased awareness led to higher water consumption, as more households regularly came for clean water.
  2. Launch Event at St. Joseph Primary and Nursery School

On June 1, 2024, The NGAO Foundation launched a new WASH initiative at St. Joseph Primary and Nursery School in Kangemi, ensuring equitable access to clean drinking water and proper sanitation for students and staff.

Achievements:

    • Installed a modern UV water filtration system, now serving over 650 students and staff.
    • Set up seven safe drinking water points across the school campus.
    • Established the Children WASH Ambassadors Club, aimed at educating peers and promoting water, sanitation, and hygiene awareness among students.
  1. Menstrual Health Session

On August 16, 2024, The NGAO Foundation, facilitated a Menstrual Health Management session for young girls at St. Joseph Primary and Nursery School. This initiative aimed to:

    • Educate students on proper menstrual hygiene management.
    • Promote health and well-being among young girls, helping to break the stigma around menstrual health.
  1. Community Engagement Event: "Kicking it for WASH"

August 17, 2024, In collaboration with Friends of Love Kibera Slums (FOLKS) and The Centre of Love Foundation (TCOLF), we organized a community event titled "Kicking it for WASH" at St. Joseph Primary and Nursery School. This soccer tournament celebrated teamwork while highlighting the importance of clean water and sanitation.

    • The event brought together students, teachers, and community members in a fun-filled atmosphere.
    • It reinforced the message that clean water and proper sanitation are essential for a healthy, thriving community.

Conclusion

The NGAO Foundation’s WASH program has made significant progress in improving access to clean water and sanitation in the communities we serve. Our focus on community engagement through the ABCD model has helped foster a sense of ownership and responsibility among residents. We are grateful to our partners and community members for their ongoing support and participation.

Next Steps

  • Continue monitoring and evaluating the impact of the installed water systems.
  • Plan additional educational sessions on key WASH topics, such as sanitation and hygiene practices.
  • Expand outreach to install water filtration systems in more schools and communities in need of clean, safe drinking water.
  • Encourage more community members to consume clean water and adopt healthy sanitation practices to improve overall public health.

Through continued partnership and community-driven initiatives, we are committed to ensuring sustainable access to clean water for all.
