This small Chisinau-based charity provides therapy for 20 children with autism and other developmental conditions. The Rain Kids Centre was set up by parents with disabled children, and has established a team of therapists. The level of training provided by Moldovan universities is not high and finding professionals with up-to-date skills is difficult. By upskilling our lead therapist, we will enable her to support our whole team and raise the quality of the therapy we are able to offer.
Autism has a short history in Moldova. The first diagnosis of childhood autism was made in 2004. For many years autistic people were given the diagnosis of being mentally retarded. This means that there is a shortage of skilled professionals able to help children reach their potential. Initially, we engaged an external supervisor to enhance our team's skills, which helped build our expertise and confidence. Over time, however, the need for our own in-house supervisor has become apparent.
For many years we have dreamed of employing our own specialist with an IBAO certificate in behavioural analysis, but we were not able to afford it. This project will fund our lead therapist, Ana Cislaru, to study for 18 months and gain the qualifications needed to supervise other therapists supporting autistic children. Ana is a very compassionate and committed member of our team. She has worked at our centre since the beginning and herself has an autistic son.
Once Ana is qualified , she will be able to supervise the eight therapists who work in our team. She will help to raise their skills, which of course will benefit the children and families who come to us for help and support. In a country where even basic understanding of autism is very limited, Ana's qualification will strengthen our organisation and allow us to advocate more efffectively for autistic children.
