This project will build a skills lab in Kamuli and train adolescents to make sanitary pads and hence improving the menstrual health of 200 women and girls and preventing them from giving away their bodies in exchange for pads and hence reducing the sky-rocketing number of teen pregnancies and HIV infections among girls and married women.
According to UNESCO 2014, there are currently One in ten girls who missed school was due to menstruation, about a 33%-61% increase in school absenteeism was due to lack of menstrual materials. Lack of pads predisposes the girls to risky behaviours in order to access money to buy pads. This can also lead to increased teenage pregnancies, HIV infection, urogenital infections, and psychosocial stress. About 65% of women surveyed were unable to meet their menstrual health needs.
This project will create a skills lab for youths in the community to be trained in making pads. These youth will also be taught to share the new skills with others who need to start up their business. This project will increase income activity for the youth in the community. The youth will be trained in menstrual health and hygiene management. The adolescent girls who experience pain and other psychosocial stresses will be managed.
The project will skill 200 adolescent girls and boys allowing them to improve their income, provide them and their families with improved health and well-being.
