This project aims to construct an indigenous eco-village with a focus on traditional Indigenous healing and living practices. The community will serve as a regional hub for health and education in the fields of intergenerational trauma, art, culture, organic agriculture, eco-construction and community development. We are currently in Phase 1 of this project with the milstones of having a Planning Proposal Created (Rezoning), Eco-Village Concept Art Developed and acquiring an Architecture Firm.
Indigenous people are currently facing two major problems, the first is that we no longer live within nature. As native people we are missing the sustainable homes that are the backbone of our way of life. The second is that our people have a difficult time fitting into the current societal norm which has the adverse effects of increased drug addictions, prison sentences and psychological disorders. With no village in place to support the people, the people are left alone in the dark.
The Unkitawa Eco-Village will reconnect Indigenous peoples to tribal community through sustainable housing options, cultural education and spiritual exposure. The space will serve as a demonstration and resource platform for sustainable community development. Change-makers from North America and on will exchange innovative ideas and learn about different tribal ways of life, permaculture, traditional medicinal plants, Earthship inspired building techniques and safe water management.
This project will empower and inspire Indigenous peoples to live their identity. Support the local community through job creation and ongoing educational opportunities. The eco-village will be built using recycled, reused, and repurposed materials whenever possible. Once the village is created it will enable the creation of further social entrepreneurship, healing paths, and green business initiatives to take place.
