Dear Friends,
We are pleased to share with you the progress of the Community Health Project in the Palajunoj Valley from June through September 2025. The Valley is home to ten rural communities, each with unique challenges. Although these villages are close to the city of Quetzaltenango, many families continue to face significant barriers to healthcare, nutrition, and basic services.
With the support of Lotus Outreach, Primeros Pasos has been able to deliver nutrition education, medical attention, and capacity-building workshops directly to the most vulnerable families. Our goal is not only to address immediate nutritional needs but also to equip families with the knowledge and skills to build healthier futures.
During this reporting period, the project reached a total of 87 families with an estimated 400 individuals across five communities: Xepache (16 households, about 80 people), Las Majadas (15 households, about 75 people), Chuicavioc (26 households, about 130 people), Candelaria (13 households, about 65–90 people), and Bella Vista (17 households, about 102 people). Each of these communities presents its own context and obstacles, ranging from geographic isolation and lack of public transportation in Bella Vista, to limited healthcare and utilities in Las Majadas, to the high rates of migration that affect families in Chuicavioc.
Several key activities were carried out to support these families. In June, a mobile clinic in Candelaria provided essential medical care to 36 individuals, including 26 women and 10 men. For many, these mobile clinics are the only opportunity to access timely medical attention, particularly mothers and children. Between July and August, five educational workshops were held on topics such as the causes and consequences of malnutrition, the importance of vaccinations, handwashing and hygiene, and breastfeeding (timed to coincide with World Breastfeeding Week). These sessions gave mothers practical tools to improve nutrition and health outcomes for their families. To complement this learning, cooking workshops were introduced, with the first session demonstrating how to prepare a simple and nutritious meal of lentils with vegetables, using affordable, locally accessible ingredients.
The impact of these interventions is already visible. Between June and August, more than 95% of participating children consistently maintained a normal nutritional status, with only one case of moderate acute malnutrition, which continues to be closely followed. The percentage of children at a healthy weight for their age rose from 78.7% in June to 89.1% in August, with several children moving out of moderate and severe underweight categories. Progress with stunting remains a challenge, but by August, 23.6% of children demonstrated normal growth, and several improved from severe to moderate stunting or reached normal growth for their age.
Pregnant women were also supported during this period. Five women were initially enrolled, and while some presented with overweight or obesity, each received tailored nutritional guidance. By August, three of the women had delivered their babies, while the remaining two continued to receive monitoring and support.
The project also faced challenges. In August, political conflicts between local leaders and the municipal government forced the suspension of all community programs in Tierra Colorada Alta. To ensure continuity of services, Primeros Pasos swiftly relocated the project to the community of Candelaria, where new families were integrated into the program.
Looking ahead, the project will expand its impact through food distribution initiatives, the provision of seedlings to encourage sustainable household nutrition, and additional mobile clinics to reach more underserved families.
Thanks to the generosity of Lotus Outreach and GlobalGiving supporters, this project is bringing essential health services and nutrition education to families who would otherwise have no access. Your support is improving immediate wellbeing while laying the groundwork for long-term, sustainable change in the Palajunoj Valley.
With gratitude,
The Primeros Pasos Team
