Project Overview
The Palajunoj Valley is composed of ten communities located near the city of Quetzaltenango, yet each community faces very different realities. Many families continue to experience food insecurity, limited healthcare access, and high rates of childhood malnutrition.
A Holistic Approach to Health in Rural Guatemala focuses on reaching the most vulnerable families in these communities by combining nutrition support, preventive healthcare, education, and food security initiatives. The goal is to address immediate nutritional challenges, and to equip families with the knowledge and tools needed to sustain healthy practices over time.
In total, 87 families are currently enrolled in the program, benefiting an estimated 460+ individuals directly and indirectly.
Mobile Clinics (June–December)
Mobile Clinics are a cornerstone of the Community Outreach Project, bringing free medical and dental care directly to remote communities. Services include:
Through these clinics, illnesses were detected early and treated before becoming severe. Participation consistently showed high engagement from women and children, which reflects trust in the program.
Health & Nutrition Education Workshops
Between July and December, multiple educational workshops were delivered, covering:
Cooking Workshops
To complement nutritional education, cooking workshops were introduced. Participants learned how to prepare nutritious, affordable meals using locally available foods.
Seedling & Seed Distribution (September)
To improve food security, 76 households received seedlings and seeds to establish family gardens.
Seedlings and seeds distributed:
Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, beet, Swiss chard, spinach, onion, tomato, black nightshade (hierbamora), parsley, celery, cilantro, radish.
Distribution was paired with gardening education to ensure successful planting and maintenance. Follow-up garden supervision is planned.
Food Distribution & Nutritional Supplementation
Each household received nutritional food kits containing staple foods such as rice, beans, pasta, Incaparina, soy protein, and cooking oil.
Additionally:
These supports helped address micronutrient deficiencies and strengthen maternal and child health.
Wart Treatment Program
From June to December, wart removal services were offered to reduce viral spread within communities. This initiative addressed a commonly neglected health issue and improved overall hygiene and comfort for beneficiaries.
Results & ImpactChild Nutrition Outcomes (June–December)
These results demonstrate that consistent monitoring, education, and food support are producing measurable improvements, especially in acute malnutrition indicators.
Maternal Nutrition
At the start of the project, five pregnant women were enrolled. Over time:
