The parakeet rangers in Suriname have continued their hard work through the rainy season, which is what they call the “parrot season.” This is a time of the year when many parrots come to our project area to nest and feed on the Maripa palm. It is spectacular to see so many parrots, and the villagers are planning on developing an ecotourism project so that they can share the parrots with others. The development of the village ecotourism project will begin in January 2024.
Even though during this season there are many parrots, the birds are still at risk because poachers line up along the rivers to trap as many parrots as they can. However, due to our project, trapping has recently decreased dramatically.
In addition, the rangers recently obtained uniforms that identify them as Kalebaskreek Rangers. The shirts include our Unconditional Solidarity symbol, which stands for the promise to be in active and concrete solidarity with all of life.
