Indigenous women accessing local markets

Indigenous women accessing local markets

Summary

Market access is essential for the development of indigenous communities. Historically, family farming, the transformation of local products and handicrafts are the sources of family and community income for the rural population in Honduras. However, these sources of life have been hit hard with an economic model that excludes family farming and community economic initiatives. Community markets have been invaded by imported agricultural produce and used clothing.

Challenge

The access to the market is fundamental for the development of the economy of small scale farmers and indigenous communities. However, these sources of income have been hard hit with the application of economic models that exclude family-owned agriculture and community-based economic initiatives. The interruption of local production and lack of marketing opportunities for small-scale and indigenous populations has fueled the unprecedented migration of young women and men from these communities.

Solution

The COMAL network believes in the ecological, social and economic value of local production and local consumption. COMAL brings together 165 community-based organizations nationally, one common strategy to confront communities reality are the strengtening of LOCAL MARKETS. COMAL members value the territories in which they live, defend their cultural heritage of ecologically-based agriculture, and seek to build strategies so that their communities cannot only survive.

Long-Term Impact

Men and women farmers from six regions of Honduras will showcase and sell their products. The market will not only permit Honduran consumers to purchase quality locally-grown or crafted products: it will offer opportunities for these producers to exchange experiences. It will bring to the attention of decision-makers in Honduras the need to support local markets and legislation that favors economic solidarity.
