Recovery under way after devastating Lombok quake

Collapsed mosque in North Lombok after the quake

The island of Lombok, home to more than 3.3 million Indonesians, was struck by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake on August 5, claiming 563 lives, injuring more than 1,000, and causing more than 400,000 residents to flee their homes in search of safety. The earthquake, the strongest ever to strike Lombok, caused widespread damage—80% of structures in North Lombok were reported as either damaged or destroyed and three of the island's bridges collapsed. The powerful earthquake also resulted in significant damage to the nearby islands of Bali and Sumbawa.

As reports of the devastation made their way around the world, support from more than 750 generous donors like yourself streamed in to support our vetted, community-led nonprofit partners assisting survivors on the island. Thanks to your generosity, our partners have been able to deliver vital aid to those in need:

  • Yayasan Bukit Kehidupan Ungasan, working in coordination with IndonesiaAid, has provided medical supplies, food, and temporary shelter to survivors on Lombok, and has built temporary water storage tanks and distribution systems to provide water to areas where service has been disrupted by the earthquake. They've also arranged for caravans of volunteers to assist with clean up and construction of temporary housing until long-term community recovery plans are in place.
  • Yayasan Ekoturisme Indonesia is focusing on the damage in Bali, where they've constructed emergency houses made from bamboo with zinc roofs. They've also distributed mattresses, pillows, woven floor mats, and bed linens to support newly homeless families living in emergency housing.

Thank you for making the generous and smart decision to donate cash to support locally led relief and recovery efforts. As recovery efforts continue, we'll keep you updated on the progress being made by our nonprofit partners in the months ahead.

Warmly,
Will Frechette + the GlobalGiving Team

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
