To end the cycle of poverty in Battambang province, Cambodia, this project was created. Helping locals get rid of explosive war leftovers in Cambodia and assisting them to become self-sufficient after the explosives are taken away, which will be achieved by giving them different ways to make money, such as through gardening and raising animals, and by supporting them to keep their income and expenses in balance. In addition, we aim to ensure that children have access to education.
During the 30-year civil war, 4-6 million landmines were buried in Cambodia. Between 1979 and 2016, 64,662 people were reportedly injured, maimed, or killed by landmines and explosive remnants of war, of whom approximately 20% were women and children. Battambang Province is the most heavily mine-contaminated area, and many people still live in vulnerable environments in this area, including landmine victims, disabled people injured in the civil war, former refugees, and former child soldiers.
The program helps vulnerable people including landmine survivors, and the poor in landmine contaminated areas. In order to reduce mine and explosive ordnance accidents, We have been funding landmine clearance organizations as a part of our help. In addition, we encourage income diversification through vegetable gardening without chemicals and livestock breeding based on the concept of agroecology. Making elementary school easy for kids gives them more learning opportunities.
There are still many the vulnerable people who are exposed to dangerous conditions. Many people are in debt because they depend on cash crop cultivation to support their families, but COVID-19 and declining prices have rendered this practice unprofitable. By assisting these communities in diversifying their income streams, Terra Renaissance hopes to lessen the risks of global economy, strengthen their ability to withstand the effects of external shocks and risks.
