Imagine graduating from high school with no family to fall back on, no money, and no understanding of how the economy works. This is the reality for many youth living in orphanages in Battambang, Cambodia.

While they are safe within the facility, the outside world is unforgiving. Without practical vocational skills and financial literacy, these young people face a high risk of returning to the cycle of extreme poverty once they "age out" of care. They possess the will to work, but they lack the tools to build a sustainable life in their rural home villages.

The Story: A Lesson Learned the Hard Way

"Wait, you sold it for less than we bought it? You’re losing money on every sale!""But the customer asked for a discount! I thought if I was nice, they would come back..."

This was the "comedy-like" debate that broke out recently at our Vocational Training Center. One of our trainees, eager to make a sale at the local Battambang Farmers Market, let a customer haggle the price of fermented soybean paste down below the cost of production.

While the other trainees laughed and debated, this was a critical learning moment. It wasn't just a mistake; it was a lesson in Cost Accounting, Negotiation, and Self-Worth.

At our center, we don't just teach farming. We teach survival. Through our "Rural Social Change Leader Development Project," we are currently training four youth from the orphanage to become independent agricultural entrepreneurs.

The Solution: Real Skills for Real Life

We believe in "learning by doing." Our project provides a comprehensive curriculum that bridges the gap between theory and practice:

• Livestock Management: Last month, our "Mouse Pigs" arrived! These are small, native pigs (about the size of a small dog). The trainees were surprised by their size but immediately took charge—building the pen, feeding them morning glory, and even lighting fires to keep the piglets warm on cold nights.
• Business Bootcamp (The Farmers Market): Every weekend, trainees wake up at 5:30 AM to set up a stall at the Battambang Farmers Market. They sell organic fertilizer, lemongrass, and lime. This is where the real school begins. They learn inventory management, customer service, and book-keeping.
• Organic Agriculture: After weeks of soil preparation, net-building, and theory classes, the trainees have finally planted their first crops of Luffa and Wax Gourd. They are learning to grow food that is safe, nutritious, and profitable.

The clock is ticking. Our current trainees have only a few months left in their program. Graduation is approaching fast. Before they return to their villages, they must master these skills to survive independently.

This is a critical window of time. We need to ramp up their practical experience, purchase more seeds and livestock feed, and ensure they have the "starter kits" (tools and seeds) they need to launch their own micro-businesses upon graduation.
