Summary

This project will improve the life quality of 7 burned children in Peru through their integral rehabilitation, including medical treatment, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, psychological support, compression garments and the reintegration into the community. This way the kids get the opportunity to live a normal life after their traumatic burn accidents. Regrettably, these accidents are relatively common in Peru due to a lack of education and prevention.

Challenge

Burn accidents happen on a frequent basis in Peru and 70% of the victims are children younger than 6 years. Most of these accidents occur due to multiple reasons such as poverty, overcrowding and missing education of the adults in the house. First aid is normally performed at state hospitals. However, the actual subsequent rehabilitation is left aside as most families cannot afford it, but is crucial for the full recuperation of the victims as burn scars tend to complicate if not treated timely.

Solution

ANIQUEM is a Peruvian NGO that since 1999 has provided more than 4,700 victims of burn accidents, mostly children, with integral rehabilitation free of cost. ANIQUEM is the only rehabilitation center for burn victims in Peru providing appropriate medical and psychological support as well as producing the necessary compressive garments. Furthermore, it raises awareness and informs the public, especially high-risk regions, about this issue to prevent these kinds of accidents from happening.

Long-Term Impact

Through one year of integral rehabilitation these 7 burned children will not only get the necessary medical treatment but will also learn how to live with their external and internal scars. Our ultimate goal is to improve their life quality, so that the kids are able to live a normal life again and convert them and their families into prevention ambassadors in their community. Together with the distribution of prevention messages they can help us to decrease the number of burn accidents in Peru.
