Summary

Alianza Arkana is running permaculture workshops with several indigenous Shipibo-Konibo communities in the Peruvian Amazon! By combining Western ecology and traditional indigenous forms of knowledge, our interdisciplinary team provides a dynamic, high-quality education geared towards empowering youth to be stewards of biodiversity from an early age. Help us support a new generation of permaculture experts.

Challenge

Oftentimes, schools in indigenous communities place little value in teaching traditional ecological knowledge. This lack of education contributes to food scarcity and land degradation. Without a proper training from an early age, communities are left with few resources to change unsustainable extraction of natural resources.

Solution

Through our reforestation initiative in Santa Clara based on permaculture design, we aim to improve the sustainability, productivity resilience of community lands. The permaculture site will help to improve the community's nutritional self-sufficiency, revitalize the community's ancestral knowledge of medicinal plants and boost the local economy. By engaging youngsters in this project, we're considering the long-term, big picture: keep biodiverse forests managed by indigenous communities.

Long-Term Impact

Our diverse intercultural education and permaculture initiatives have already created visible results and received high praise from community members, neighboring schools, and the regional government. We aim to replicate the program in more Shipibo communities across the Peruvian Amazon by offering training programs in intercultural education and permaculture for other Shipibo communities based on our flagship project in Santa Clara.
