Permaculture and Reforestation in 2018

By Charlotte Biren | Communications Coordinator

Talking Project Planning with Youth
Talking Project Planning with Youth

We ring in 2018 with the final stage of our Reforestation Project in the Shipibo community of Santa Clara. We are working with Shipibo specialists to plant aguaje, a plant native to the Amazonian region which also happens to be quite delicious. The aguaje also conserves water and acts as prevention against forest fires as temperatures rise.

After the aguaje is planted and the reforested region is complete, we begin to transition the Permaculture Project, that the Reforestation Project is part of, to the Santa Clara community. We are building off of the amazing work our volunteers have done with the Santa Clara Youth Association and continuing capacity building and skills training. The goal is to equip community members with the skills needed to maintain the reforested region and other aspects of the permaculture project.

Furthermore, we are going to work closely with the community to explain and show the value of permaculture as an ecological solution and social philosophy. We are excited about this transition and are going to work on bringing in other Shipibo professionals from Ucayali to discuss agroforestry, ecological solutions, and permaculture, in the form of 'charlas,' or chats, to be held within the community.

2018 holds much in store for Santa Clara and we are focusing this year on building intercommunity solidarity, which means collaborating with other Shipibo people and organizations to strengthen knowledge transfer and build capacity in a cultural appropriate and relevant manner.

We are working through the technical details of our 2018 Permaculture Project, and will share our work plan with you as it will be a big step for us here at Alianza, as move towards incorporating Shipibo professionals into our network. Thank you again for your support, it is much appreciated!
