One of the fundamental objectives of working with the youth and community of Santa Clara is developing a more efficient waste management system. After an introductory workshop on the importance of recycling, Alianza Arkana organized an *eco-brick and flower pot making day!
We were pleasantly surprised that over 20 individuals between the ages of 7 to 25 years old participated in this workshop. The participants were divided into four teams. The first group prepared the plastic bottles to make the flower pots. The second group went to collect soil with a wheelbarrow. The third group helped to prepare the lunch – which was shared between all the participants as a reward for a hard days work. The fourth group recollected plastic waste throughout the entire community.
After an hour and a half the groups came together in order to fill the bottles with the recollected garbage. We made over 15 eco-bricks! We concluded this workshop with homework: each participant was asked to start putting the waste generated by their household directly into the plastic bottles.
The long term aim is to use these bottles to create a composting structure. We’re eager to see this initiative and the waste management system of Santa Clara develop in the coming months!
*Eco-bricks are plastic bottles filled with garbage, which can then be used as a substitute for traditional bricks when constructing.
