Provide Sudanese People an Information Lifeline

Summary

The brutal fighting in Sudan has sparked a major humanitarian crisis. The UN estimates that more than 840,000 people have already been forced to leave their homes. In this incredibly difficult context, we at Internews are supporting people to access the information they need to make life-saving decisions for themselves and their families, by identifying dangerous mis- and disinformation, and by providing people with trustworthy and reliable alternatives.

Challenge

Imagine needing to make decisions about your safety based on third-hand information from social media. People in Sudan and those who have left as refugees are faced with this challenge daily. With few options to access verified information they can trust, individuals must make life changing decisions to cross borders, find safe shelter, and reliable healthcare and mobile networks to access. Information is everywhere, but people struggle to determine what is true, false, or potentially fatal.

Solution

With our two decades of experience in the region, Internews is working with humanitarians and civil society, including local media, to: share timely information and answer urgent questions in local languages; track, manage, and report harmful mis-and disinformation that threatens already vulnerable people; support community radio stations in Chad and South Sudan to broadcast information for newly arrived refugees; and provide platforms for refugees connect with their new communities.

Long-Term Impact

This project will help displaced people by connecting them with verified and trustworthy information so they can make well informed decisions for their safety and wellbeing and advocate for their needs. Better information in local languages and tailored work with local media helps reduce tensions, combat harmful stereotypes, and improve people's resilience to cope. Elevating community voices so humanitarian responders can tailor services ensures aid dollars have the greatest impact.
