Challenge

Trillions of dollars are spent each year on internationally financed projects like mines, agro-industrial plantations, and wind farms. These projects often devastate vulnerable populations in their path, through impacts like forced displacement, physical abuses, and environmental devastation. Corporations, banks, and governments have rules to prevent harm to the people and places affected by these projects, but they are often violated - leaving millions of people vulnerable to harm every year.

Solution

Accountability Counsel exists to bridge these barriers for communities and strengthen accountability in global finance. Our model uses a high-leverage point of influence - the accountability offices tied to international investments - to give communities a voice in the decisions affecting them. We pay particular attention to the rights of Indigenous Peoples, women and girls, youth, and other marginalized groups.

Long-Term Impact

Our vision is a paradigm shift so that communities take part in decisions that affect them and secure remedy to realize rights; effective and robust accountability systems deter abuses; and international institutions and corporations respect communities and prevent abuses.
