Focusing on development from within, CHANT's heritage and nature tourism program and traditional building arts programs serve as an engine for sustainable economic development, contributing to a new era of increased broad-based prosperity and community pride. Our project, Invisible Heritage and the Building Arts Program provides training for underserved youth in woodworking and masonry and, will restore a vernacular dwelling in the town of Frederiksted. Our Project is an intervention crafted to meet our communities' concrete needs for habitable buildings and viable employment. Community centered approaches anchored in the local dynamics are utilized to activate these neglected and abandoned spaces. The project will provide 15 youth between the ages of 18-30 with workforce development training in woodworking and masonry. 20 general community members will be able to participate in workshops in woodworking and sculpture. 1 Vernacular cottage located at #38 Hospital Street Frederiksted will be restored. 4 Craftsmen/Artisans in residence will provide training and community workshops.
The instructor, Glen Peterson describes himself as an amateur woodworker, woodturner and student of woodworking for over 30 years. He has studied with many modern masters including David Ellsworth, Phillip Lowe, Steve Latta and Mike Pekovich. He builds a wide variety of furniture from replicas of antiques to craftsman style with a modern twist. Additionally, Glen retired after thirty years in education and after serving as the State Coordinator of Workforce Development for Connecticut Department of Education. CHANT applied for Historic Preservation funding through the Virgin Islands State Historic Preservation Office for the restoration of #38 Hospital Street, Frederiksted, VI. We have received approval for $150,000 in funding for phase 1 of the project.
CHANT continues to work in the community and building partnerships with community-based organizations to promote and protect the built and natural environment of St. Croix and the Virgin Islands.
