Our overall outcome is to create a conducive environment where women and girls' security and safety will be observed and their rights knowledge enhanced in the slum/peri-urban areas to end violence against them. Our theory of change, underpins men as key power blockers in women's economic empowerment. By working with male "transformers" for social change, SAP will identify selected women's groups who will be mentored and empowered and male youth artists groups will be used as transformers.
Gender based violence affects mainly girls and women in the slum areas. The societal structures within the slum community have men in positions of power, and some of these men use their power disappropriately. Misuse of power results in domestic violence, sexual abuse and other forms of abuse against women and girls. The most reported forms of violence in the slums are defilement, wife beating, economic deprivation of food and other basic needs by spouses to their wives and children.
The outcome of the project is to create a conducive environment where women and girls' security and safety will be observed and their rights knowledge enhanced. SAP as a women's organization will also be empowered to effectively influence and advance gender equality to end violence against women and girls. SAP also seeks to build community structures and a network of male champions (referred to hereafter as transformers) that will challenge negative gender norms that enhance GBV.
The project will strengthen the capacities of women and men in the community with a conviction to end gender based violence which affects women and girls mostly. By twining with local male youths artists, music will be used as a tool to transform negative ideas and beliefs. Women will be empowered to make informed decisions about their own lives peacefully. Women's skills will be improved to engage in income generating activities. Information flow for market women will be improved too.
