Summary

This project will build an irrigation system for our Half Day School's rice fields which are part of the vocational training at DEPDC and also provide rice for our school's lunch program. The irrigation system will improve the field's water supply significantly and will work most of the rice growing season without using energy.

Challenge

DEPDC's Half Day School (HDS) has its own rice fields used for the vocational training of our students and to support the school's lunch program. The current irrigation system depends on a borrowed pump that needs to run whenever the fields need water.

Solution

The new irrigation system will provide the fields with water only by using gravity for most of the rice growing season. Only during low water levels in the stream next to our fields the new pump will be necessary to provide the fields with water.

Long-Term Impact

The rice grown in HDS's fields is used for our school's lunch program that benefits about 60 students daily, providing them with at least one nutritious meal per day. The new irrigation system will improve water availability for DEPDC's rice fields during the rice growing season. The improved water supply will increase the harvest and reduce the risk of bad harvest because of drought. Additionally, the system can be used to provide water to DEPDC's vegetable fields and improve food security.
