A collaborative effort for watering saplings!

Dharmapuri Isha Vidhya school has been planting
and nurturing saplings around its campus. With
great effort, these saplings have been maintained.
The major challenge with the maintenance is the
water scarcity in the Dharmapuri area.

One of the teachers, Mr. Arivalagan, came up with
an idea in the last term of students taking care of
water for the saplings. Students were asked if they
could bring a botte (1 litre) of water (not drinking
water) to water the saplings, which the students
happily agreed. Plants were allotted to groups of
students. Students started participating in this activity
enthusiastically.

The next phase of the activity was also started in
this term, in which five students from different classes
were be grouped. One of the students would bring
water on Monday, second on Tuesday; etc. up for the
5 days of the school week. 16 such groups were
formed so that 80 saplings are watered throughout the
week.

Mr. Arivalagan shares, "We clearly noticed students
developed interest in bringing water daily to take care
of their friend (sapling)."

As you can see, this activity brings a sense of
responsbility in the students to take care of the
saplings, which will eventually grow towards they
taking care of the Earth and the Environment
in the future!

Indian Republic Day celebrations at Isha Vidhya

India Republic Day honours the date on which the Constitution of India
came into effect on the 26^th of January, 1950 replacing the Government
of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India.

The Constitution was adopted by the Indian Constituent Assembly on the
26^th of November, 1949, and came into effect on the 26^th of January, 1950,
with a democratic government system, completing the country's transition
towards becoming an independent republic. 26^th of January was chosen as
the Republic day because it was on this day in 1930, the Declaration of
Indian Independence was proclaimed by the Indian National Congress as
opposed to the Dominion status offered by the British Regime.

We would like to bring you the Republic Day celebrations at one of the
Isha Vidhya schools.

At the Dharmapuri school, Mr. Gnanasekaran, a volunteer hoisted the
Indian national flag. After the parade, the cultural programs were
conducted. Students came up with speeches & songs in English and in
Tamil. There was a conversation about the difference between the
Independence day and the Republic Day, followed by dances. The
speech by the school Principal covered several aspects like the importance
of Yoga for the well-being.

To encourage the audience participation, a quiz was conducted with
questions related to the Republic day. Students participated in the quiz
enthusiastically. Prizes were distributed to the winners of the competition.
to all our delight, a pretty young student Shylaja of third grade won two
prizes!

The celebration ended with the performing of the Indian National Anthem.

Shares the school Principal, “We all felt happy that our students got a
chance to showcase their talents in front of our central team along with
HR which is a rare opportunity.”

About Air by experiments : Dharmapuri School

Air occupies space - demo by filling the balloons

We all know how difficult it is to understand concepts
like elements (air, water, earth, etc.) at an early age,
but we also do know that it is important to teach those
concepts to the children as early as possible. Especially,
young children learn well by the way of demonstration.

Keeping this in mind, the grade 2 teachers of Dharmapuri
school organised a learning session about air, in which
the teacher and the students participated. The students
were given balloons to be filled with air. Other objects
like kites were also present for the session. Colourful charts
were also prepared to highlight the concepts.

The students filled the air in the balloon, which demonstrated
how air fills in an object and make it bulge. The students
were then taken to the playground, where the prepared
balloons were tied and let into the air, which showed how
the air lifted the balloons which contained the air. Children
were also asked to play and bounce the balloons to get a
feel of how the air acts on the balloons. Kites were also
used to demonstrate how the air lifted them, and the pressure
that is exerted on them by the air.

Shares 2nd grade teacher Elangovan:

"Today, I took Environmental Science activity for the 2nd grade
from the 'Air' lesson. I informed the students a day before to
bring the material needed. They brought all the required things
like balloons, paper, thread, gum, broomsticks etc, With those,
we prepared kites, blown balloons & moved to the playground
to learn the practical demonstration. The students enjoyed
the activity a lot. Through this activity, students experienced
the feel of air which they couldn't see with their eyes, which
is the key point of the 'Air' lesson."
