A method that makes learning integers easier!
By Venkat Ramakrishnan | Project Leader
Scale of numbers
Learning should not be restricted to the traditional,
formal methods, but new methods and techniques
should be explored, so that students get to grasp
the concepts in multiple ways!
To introduce the concept of 'Integers', Math teachers
at the Isha Vidhya Vanavasi School created an activity
named ‘Integer scale‘ for students of classes 6th to
8th grade. Paper cards showing zero, positive and
negative numbers were pasted on the corridor floor
and students were asked to attempt questions based
on them.
The exercises that they given were (a) Identify the
numbers which are integers, (b) Comparison of
integers, (c) Addition and subtraction of the integers,
and (d) Finding predecessor, successor and the other
numbers between the integers.
Such innovative techniques hone the learning abilities
of the students at Isha Vidhya. We continue to strive
to come up with new methods and techniques which
make the learning a lot easier and enjoyable for
the children!
If you would like to support the effort of math learning,
you are welcome do so by making a donation to the
math lab option in the link provided.
We thank you for all you did for Isha Vidhya!
Thanks & Best Regards,

Farewell to 10th std students at Villupuram school
By Venkat Ramakrishnan | Project Leader
The group of students - 1
Students of Isha Vidhya Villupuram school gave farewell
to the outgoing 10th standard students. The farewell party
was planned with a lot of enthusiasm.
The program started with juniors welcoming the outgoing
students.
The outgoing students reflected on the joyful time spent
in the school. They spoke fondly of moments spent with
the classmates, the teachers and others. They thanked
their teachers for love and guidance, not just in the
academics but also many aspects of life.
All had a great time playing games. It was time for
teachers to wish them luck and success for future. The
program came to an end with lighting of lamp.
This is the second set of Isha Vidhya students going out
after completing their 10th grade. We wish them all the
best in their future endeavors, either be it higher secondary
education or taking up a profession of their own.
It's heartening to see some of the first generation school
goers from under-privileged families complete school and
lead their life!

Lower Kindergarten students learn ABC !
By Venkat Ramakrishnan | Project Leader
Alphabets on balloons!
Isha Vidhya dedicate days for inculcating concepts
and themes into the education. Along these lines,
Alphabet Day was celebrated by the lower
kindergarten students of the Tuticorin school.
Arrangements:
English teachers Ms. Aruna & Mrs. Subbulakshmi
decorated the class with balloons with alphabets
painted on them. Letter cards were prepared using
chart papers and markers and inserted them in ice
cream cups filled with sand.
On the day of the event:
The highlight of the day was presenting the
students with crowns that had alphabets on them!
Interesting games were played to reinforce learning
of English alphabets. Alphabets cards were distributed
among the students and they were asked to match
them with the alphabets in the rangoli
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rangoli)
Then the teacher distributed newspapers to the
students and asked them to circle the alphabets as
they are called out. What could have been a boring
classroom teaching of alphabets was transformed into
a fun event which was enjoyed by the kids and the
teachers alike!
Sharing by Arishkumar, Lower Kindergarten 'B'
section:
"We saw the teachers preparing the alphabets, flowers
and pictures. It was very colourful. My teachers drew
the alphabet kolam. It was drawn by colour chalk pieces.
We searched our name first letter. We sat around the
kolam. I liked the balloons A B C D letters were written
on the balloons. My teachers invited the Principal to
Alphabet day. She came to my class room and asked
some questions. She tied the alphabet crown on my
head. My teacher took the photo. I felt very happy.
Principal asked which teacher name is started by A?
We shouted and said the answer 'Aruna miss'!"
So, when the tiny tots learn the ABCs, it is heartening
to watch! And you too, can join this effort and make a
difference in these children's lives by making a monthly
recurring donation for a small amount at the link provided
with this report!
