Improving English vocabulary has been a priority at Isha Vidhya schools.
Tools like ‘Power English’ sessions and use of computer time to check
spellings and application of words in sentences have been part of the
English language curriculum at our schools. At the same time, we had
been thinking about off-computer initiatives that will help the students
learn new words and practice them by applying on a day-to-day basis.
Dharmapuri Isha Vidhya school came up with the fantastic initiative of
doing ‘Word-of-the-day’ at the school. The teachers at the school agreed
to come up with an English word each day, and ask the students of the
middle school (6th to 8th standards) to come up with sentences of their
own using that word. The meaning of the word, and a few examples are
provided to the students to help them understand the word.
The initiative has been a success as we hear from the school! Shares
Sridevi, the English teacher at the Dharmapuri school:
“I started this activity in the second term. The objective of this activity
is to strengthen the vocabulary of the students. In the previous term,
I experimented with giving just the word, and asking the students to find
the meaning and form the sentences. I observed difficulties in the
students in doing this exercise, so I amended the exercise by giving the
meaning and a few example sentences too, along with the word. Now I
see noticeable increase in student interest and participation.
This initiative is helpful not just for the students, but for me too, as my
vocabulary is also getting improved! In the class, students are able to
recollect the words that they learnt through this exercise. I feel this is a
budding success. Further success lies in students using the words in
their writing and while they speak!”
Such initiatives add to the strength of the English lab that is already
active in our schools. We encourage you to help us procure English
lab materials for our schools. You can do so by donating at our project
page. Better yet, if you can make a recurring monthly donation for a
small amount, rather than one single big donation, you can be involved
on a regular basis in helping our English labs! :
Our heart-felt gratitude for your continued support. As always, we would
like to ask you to spread the word about Isha Vidhya to your circle of
contacts by sharing this report.
Thanks & Best Regards,
