Volunteering: Story of making a difference

By Godfred | Grow Ghanas IT lead trainer

Jan and Luzius dedicating their gap year to a better cause

Today, we shine our light on our two long-term German volunteers, who finally bring their marathon to an end this month. “An end is only a beginning in disguise”. - Craig D. Lounsbrough

After High School, Jan and Luzius decided to take a gap year to develop their skills and gain real-life experience, which they considered volunteering, also an opportunity to build a better society.

Their volunteer journey started in September 2021, when they had to relocate all the way to Ghana and this was their first time in an African country. New to the working environment and diverse culture in Ghana, they had a challenging start but coped gradually as they made new friends with other volunteers and people in the society.
Jan, our Video Content Creator, is in charge of shooting and editing videos for our social media. He assisted in training sessions and the preparation of presentations and learning materials for teaching. Having a very sociable and friendly vibe, he relates very well with the students and natives of the community.

Meet Luzius, our Tech guy. Mostly seated by his laptop and surrounded by Raspberry Pis, finding ways and means to fix them. [Anyways you can donate to help us purchase more devices and maintain the current ones to run smooth coding lessons]. He gave our previous website a new look, updating the layout and adding more exciting content. [You should check it out: www.growghana.org] Also, he developed an Android Scratch Quiz app which is instrumental for beginners learning scratch programming.

“The best year of my life so far is coming to an end. I developed my personality a lot with all the good experiences and the completely different life. I do not wanna judge about my impact here, but it was always fun and exciting to work and life in Ghana.” - Jan

A solid one year of making an impact in the lives of young students and empowering them for the digital future.

You can volunteer with us remotely or make a donation to sustain the work of the organization. Help us reach our goal to empower young students for the digital future.

Thank you for your support.

Gifty, Benjamin, Jennifer, Godfred, Luzius, Jan and Cara
